What is the difference between Newborn Formula and Follow-on Formula?
The nutritional needs of a baby are determined by the age of the baby and its development stage. A newborn has different nutritional requirements compared to a baby over 6 months of age and a 12 month old has further nutritional requirements.
Blackmores Newborn Formula is designed to meet the special nutritional needs of newborn infants from 0 – 6 months old. It contains proteins, fats and carbohydrates.
The Follow-on Formula is for babies 6 – 12 months who have different nutritional requirements and often at this stage complementary foods are introduced into the diet. The Follow-on Formula is designed to meet the needs of a rapidly growing 6 – 12 month old baby with additional iron, folate, protein, vitamin B2 and nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and phosphorus.
However, the main difference between the two formulas is the milk protein proportions. Whey and casein are key components of milk that provide protein. In the Newborn Formula there is more whey protein than casein protein. This is similar to the protein ratio found in breastmilk and is more suitable for the newborn baby’s digestion.
In the Follow-on Formula there is equal casein and whey protein. The proportions are changed as casein is slower to digest than whey and may keep your baby feeling fuller for longer and better complement the introduction of solid foods.
Both products contain proteins from fresh natural cow’s milk and added nutrients to meet the nutritional requirements for infants 0 – 12 months old as set out by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ).
Do your formulas contain all the nutrients my baby needs until 12 months?
Our Newborn Formula for 0 – 6 month olds and our Follow-on Formula for 6 to 12 month olds are nutritionally balanced, containing proteins from fresh cow’s milk and other essential nutrients that are age appropriate and meet the strict nutritional requirements identified by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). Is the Newborn Formula suitable through until 12 months? Can I then change to the Toddler Milk Drink?
It is important to choose a formula that is age-appropriate. Consult your health care professional for advice but the Newborn Formula may not meet the nutritional needs of a baby over the age of 6 months.
Blackmores Toddler Milk Drink supports busy toddlers nutritional needs and contains iodine which contributes to cognitive function; iron, zinc and vitamins C, A & D to support healthy immunity; vitamin D and calcium for growing bones. The Toddler Milk Drink is a supplement to a normal diet to address situations where intakes of energy and nutrients may not be adequate to meet a busy toddler’s requirements.
What is Toddler Milk Drink?
The Toddler Milk Drink has been formulated to help meet the nutritional requirements of children aged 12 months and older. A toddler’s nutritional requirements are different from those of younger babies. It is a tasty milk drink containing iodine needed for cognitive function, zinc & vitamin C to support immunity, vitamin D and calcium for growing bones. It should not be used as the sole source of nutrition but to supplement a normal diet to address situations where intakes of energy and nutrients may not be adequate to meet an individual’s requirements.
Where is Blackmores Infant Nutrition Range made?
The Blackmores Infant Nutrition Range is made in Australia by Tatura, containing proteins from fresh cow’s milk that is sourced directly from local farmers.
The Tatura dairies are located in the idyllic Goulburn Valley in northern Victoria, Australia, close to the Tatura manufacturing facilities.
At Tatura the quality assurance levels are very high and robust. Milk is tested each step of the way from the farm through to the final packed product. All of the milk used by Tatura is 100% traceable back to the farm where the milk came from.
Is Blackmores Infant Nutrition Range organic?
No. The Blackmores Infant Nutrition Range contains high quality proteins from natural Australian cow’s milk. The milk contains no preservatives and the cows are fed on grass. All products are tested for contaminants, to ensure that the products are of a high quality standard.
Is your formula gluten free?
Yes. The Blackmores Infant Nutrition Range contains no detectable gluten.
My baby has a cow’s milk allergy – can I use your formula?
The Blackmores Infant Nutrition Range contains cow’s milk and is not suitable for babies who have a cow’s milk allergies.

Is it lactose free?
The Blackmores Infant Nutrition Range is not lactose free. Lactose is an important component of both breastmilk and infant formula. It is the principal carbohydrate source for infants and plays a role in helping to establish the healthy bacteria in an infant’s intestine in the first 12 months.
My baby is lactose intolerant – can I use these products?
The Blackmores Infant Nutrition Range contains lactose and is not suitable for babies who have been diagnosed as lactose intolerant.

What are the key ingredients of Blackmores Infant Nutrition Range?
The key ingredients are protein and lactose from cow’s milk, fatty acids, prebiotics, vitamins and minerals.
Do your formulas contain Omega fatty acids?
Yes there are omega fatty acids in the three products in our Infant Nutrition range. These fatty acids are a component of the fat content and help support baby’s development.
STORAGE & USE
Once opened, how long can I use the formula?
Contents of containers should always be used within four weeks of opening. Do not use a container if the seal is broken and always replace the plastic lid after use. Store the container in a cool, dry place and once it is open use the contents within four weeks.
How should I store my opened container of infant formula?

Does using a microwave impact the good nutrients in the Blackmores Infant Nutrition range?
Ideally boil fresh drinking water for five minutes and then leave to cool before mixing with the recommended amount of formula powder.
The main concerns with microwaves is that they heat baby's milk and food unevenly. This results in "hot spots" within the feed that may not be detected when you touch the bottle and result in scalding a baby's mouth and throat.
Always check the formula temperature on your wrist then feed immediately.
Can I reheat and use leftover formula?
It is recommended to prepare and use each bottle separately and freshly for every feed. Discard unused portions and do not keep for later feeding.
Do your tins contain BPA (Bisphenol A)?
No, our containers and lids are free from BPA. Both containers and lids are recyclable.
Can my baby have more or less feeds than is indicated on the container?
Follow the instructions for preparing the bottle as directed on the container. The feeding guide will give the proportions of the powder required. Incorrect preparation can make your baby very ill so always follow instructions on pack.

What will happen if I give my child more or less feeds than recommended on the pack?
It is important to use the feeding guide on the container and follow the instructions when preparing the bottles. If you are unsure about the feeding requirements of your baby you should check with your health care professional.
Can I make up formula in advance and store it in the fridge?
Ideally formula should be prepared just prior to feeding. Otherwise refrigerate prepared formula and use within 24 hours. We do not recommend making up feeds ahead of time. When mixed with water the powder becomes a perishable food product and can be prone to spoilage.
