We’re all well aware about the importance of protecting our skin and being sun safe. But protection for your eyes is just as important.

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can cause irritation, and damage both the surface and interior of your eyes. It can also damage the delicate and thin skin around your eyes, including the eyelids. Light can penetrate your eyes from above, and reflect up from below, especially around water, sand and other bright surfaces.

Sunglasses play a vital role in protecting your eyes from the sun's harmful rays, but not all sunglasses are the same. Here are four things to consider when choosing your next pair.

1. Polarised lenses - Polarised lenses reduce reflective glare from water and land surfaces, making them good for driving, water sports and outdoor activities. However, polarised lenses also need UV filtering for adequate eye protection, so check the label.

2. Wrap it up - Curved sunglasses block out more of the light that hits your eyes from above, below, and from the sides of the frame.

3. Set the standard - Check the label or swing tag for the code AS/NZS 1067, which means the sunglasses meet the Australian and New Zealand standard’s required for adequate eye protection against UVR damage.

4. A snug and comfortable fit - Sunglasses should fit close to your face to minimise the amount of light coming in from the sides. However, they should also look and feel good, because they need to be worn as often as possible to provide the best protection.
